Cannes 2025: Movies to Look Forward to at the 78th Film Festival – From Alpha to The History of Sound
The Cannes Film Festival is back, and as always, it’s ready to showcase some of the best films from around the world. Known for celebrating great cinema, this year’s festival promises a mix of powerful stories, talented filmmakers, and strong performances. From Alpha to The History of Sound, here are six films that are creating a lot of buzz before their big premieres.
1. Alpha
Director Julia Ducournau, who has already won the Palme d’Or before, is returning with Alpha. This film is a horror story set during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. It’s said to be Ducournau’s most personal and emotional work yet and is one of the top films competing at Cannes this year.
2. Eddington
Big stars like Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal come together for Eddington, a film set during the COVID-19 pandemic. This movie mixes modern themes with dark humor, exploring tensions between the police and local government. The cast also includes Emma Stone and Austin Butler, and the story takes place in a small town in New Mexico.
3. The History of Sound
Directed by Oliver Hermanus, this film tells a touching story set during World War I. Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor play Lionel and David, two students at the New England Conservatory who travel to collect folk songs from people across the country. The film also explores their romantic relationship, making it a deeply emotional and historical drama.
4. Highest 2 Lowest
Director Spike Lee and actor Denzel Washington are teaming up for the fifth time in Highest 2 Lowest. It’s based on the classic 1963 crime film High and Low by Akira Kurosawa. Washington plays a businessman caught in a complicated journey of highs and lows. The movie also stars rapper Ice Spice, A$AP Rocky, and actor Jeffrey Wright, and is loosely inspired by the book King’s Ransom.
5. Die, My Love
After almost ten years away from directing, Lynne Ramsay returns with Die, My Love. Jennifer Lawrence plays Grace, a new mother struggling with postpartum depression. Robert Pattinson plays her husband, while LaKeith Stanfield plays her lover. The movie shows Grace’s mental struggles as she nears her breaking point.
6. Honey Don’t
Starring Chris Evans and Margaret Qualley, Honey Don’t is a crime comedy directed by Ethan Coen. The story follows a small-town detective trying to solve a series of local murders. Aubrey Plaza plays a lesbian cop in the film. Qualley previously worked with Coen on Drive-Away Dolls, released last year.
These six films are some of the most exciting titles to watch out for at Cannes 2025. Whether it’s emotional stories, mystery, or historical drama — this year’s lineup has something for every movie lover.
