Did You Know Suniel Shetty First Said No to Border? The Reason Might Surprise You
Border is one of the most iconic films in Suniel Shetty’s career. His role as Bhairav Singh Rathod in the 1997 war drama, directed by JP Dutta, is still remembered by fans. But what many people don’t know is that Suniel Shetty actually said no to the film at first!
In a recent interview with Radio Nasha, Suniel shared why he didn’t want to do Border in the beginning. He explained that there were rumors in the film industry that director JP Dutta was very strict and could be harsh on set. “When he got angry, he would use abusive language,” the Hera Pheri actor said.
So, when JP Dutta came to meet him about the film, Suniel told him he’d think about it. But later, he told his secretary that he didn’t want to be part of the project.
He revealed his reason honestly: “If he abused me, I might lose my temper and hit back. I have a short fuse too. I didn’t want to create problems or spoil relationships.”
But JP Dutta was determined to cast Suniel in the role. He reached out to someone who knew Suniel’s mother-in-law. She then sat down with him and convinced him to reconsider the role. Suniel couldn’t say no to her.
Even then, Suniel agreed to do the film with one condition—if anything went wrong between him and JP Dutta, he would walk away from the project. Luckily, that never happened. In fact, Suniel said the two of them got along really well and bonded instantly.
What’s Next for Suniel Shetty?
On the work front, Suniel will be seen next in Hera Pheri 3, directed by Priyadarshan. The comedy film will also bring back Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal in their famous roles as Raju and Babu Bhaiya. As Pinkvilla reported earlier, filming is expected to begin in December 2025.
