All About Haymitch Abernathy
Haymitch is a 16-year-old from District 12, known for being smart, blunt, and short-tempered. He lives with his poor mother and younger brother, Sid. During the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, something unexpected happens — a tribute tries to escape. To cover it up, the Capitol picks Haymitch as a replacement and redoes the reaping.
Haymitch’s fellow District 12 tributes are Wyatt Callow, Louella McCoy, and Maysilee Donner.
During the tribute parade, tragedy strikes when Louella is killed by a horse-drawn chariot. Haymitch, angry and defiant, leaves her body outside President Snow’s mansion as a bold protest. Snow threatens him, saying the Gamemakers will make sure he suffers if he steps out of line again. Louella is quickly replaced by a body double, Lou Lou, who enters the arena in her place.
