Born on December 6, 1947, in Sarhali Kalan, East Punjab, Praveen Kumar Sobti made his mark in sports long before he became an actor. His life story is a true example of championship, both in sports and beyond.
While serving as a soldier with the Border Security Force (BSF), Praveen started training in discus and hammer throw in the 1960s, encouraged by his officers. This support helped him compete in international events, beginning an impressive sports career.
Praveen represented India in the 1966 Asian Games, where he won a gold medal in discus throw and a bronze medal in hammer throw. He also participated in two Olympic Games—the 1968 Mexico Olympics and the 1972 Munich Olympics.
In the 1970 Asian Games, Sobti won another gold medal, and in the 1974 Asian Games, he added a silver medal to his collection. He also won a silver medal in hammer throw at the 1966 Commonwealth Games. For his incredible contributions to Indian sports, he was awarded the Arjuna Award, India’s second-highest sporting honor, in 1967.
Praveen’s strong build and powerful presence eventually led him to the film industry, where he started as a large henchman in the Jeetendra-starrer film Raksha. This role kicked off his acting career, leading to many more film and TV roles. But it was his role in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat that truly made him unforgettable, as he brought the mighty Pandava Bhim to life with unmatched intensity.
Praveen Kumar Sobti passed away from a heart attack on February 7, 2022, at the age of 74. Although he is no longer with us, his legacy continues to inspire future generations, representing the spirit of perseverance, strength, and dedication.
