Ratan Tata & Gufi Paintal’s Unlikely Friendship: IIT Hostel Mates

Did you know Ratan Tata and Mahabharat actor Gufi Paintal lived in the same hostel and shared a close bond? THROWBACK

Let’s take a look back at a special moment when Gufi Paintal, the actor from Mahabharat, talked about his close friendship with the late industrialist Ratan Tata.

Ratan Tata, the legendary businessman, passed away on October 9, leaving the entire country in shock. Many people, including celebrities, paid tribute to him. Among the stories that came out after his death, one was about his bond with Gufi Paintal, who played Shakuni in the famous Mahabharat TV series.

Gufi Paintal shared that he lived in the same hostel as Ratan Tata when he was studying engineering in Jamshedpur. His room was number 22, while Ratan Tata, who had just returned from the USA after finishing his training, stayed in room 21.

Paintal described Ratan Tata as a true gentleman. He felt proud, both as an Indian and as a friend, to see Ratan Tata lead the Tata Group of Companies. He explained that they were close friends, and he was the only student invited to Ratan Tata’s room for conversations. “He had a beautiful silver convertible Plymouth and a high-fidelity radio in his car. Back then, having a radio in the car was a big deal,” Gufi added.

One memorable moment Gufi shared was when Ratan Tata gave him the keys to his Plymouth so he could take his mother for a drive. “Ratan came quietly, handed me the keys, and said, ‘Take your mother for a drive.'”

Gufi also recalled a time when he accidentally ran into Ratan Tata in Bandra. He was crossing Linking Road when a big car stopped, and inside were two large dogs. It was Ratan Tata. He offered Gufi a ride, but Gufi thanked him and said, “No, Ratan, my car is just across the road.”

Ratan Tata passed away at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after struggling with health issues. His body was wrapped in the Indian national flag and placed at the NCPA, where people from all walks of life came to pay their last respects.
