In the latest episode of Shark Tank India 4, Anupam Mittal surprised everyone by changing his decision at the last moment. At first, he rejected a pitch, but just before the entrepreneur left, he decided to invest. Let’s find out what made him change his mind.
A Young Entrepreneur’s Dream Pitch
The episode featured a Campus Special, where young entrepreneurs got a chance to present their ideas. One of them, Sanjay, a BCA 3rd-year student from Rajasthan, shared his startup idea called NearBook—an online platform where users can buy, sell, donate, and rent books.
The Sharks were impressed by Sanjay’s idea and passion, but they also noticed some flaws in the business model. Because of this, all five Sharks initially backed out, and it seemed like Sanjay would leave without a deal.
Anupam Mittal’s Last-Minute Change of Heart
Just as Sanjay was about to walk out, Anupam Mittal stopped him. He paused for a moment and said that the pitch reminded him of his own journey as an entrepreneur.
He shared, “I was 13, and I didn’t have a mentor. It took me years to understand how business works. I feel you need a mentor.”
Recognizing Sanjay’s dedication, Anupam decided to invest. He said, “I won’t be happy with myself if I walk away after saying such big things. I see myself in you.”
To everyone’s surprise, he offered ₹40 lakhs for 2% equity—exactly what Sanjay asked for!
A Dream Deal for the Pitcher
Sanjay was thrilled and revealed that he had entered the tank hoping to get a deal from Anupam Mittal. Hearing this, Anupam smiled and replied, “This is more for me than for you. I wouldn’t have been able to sleep at night if I had walked away from this deal.”
Anupam Mittal’s Own Business Journey
Anupam then shared his own experience—he started his first business at the age of 13 with a book platform. He tried many ideas, but none of them succeeded. Eventually, he got a chance to study in the United States, where he learned the right way to build a business.
