The White Lotus Star Jason Isaacs Reacts to Duke University T-Shirt Controversy: “Just Wanted to Go Viral”
The White Lotus Season 3 star Jason Isaacs isn’t afraid to speak his mind. Recently, he responded to the drama involving Duke University after the show used their logo on a t-shirt.
In the HBO series, Jason’s character, Timothy Ratliff, wears a Duke University t-shirt during a dark dream scene involving a murder-suicide. However, this upset the university, and they weren’t happy about their logo being used like that.
Frank Tramble, Duke’s Vice President for communications and public affairs, told The New York Times that the show used the logo without permission and said the way it was shown was troubling and didn’t represent the school’s values.
According to Variety, Isaacs showed up to the Season 3 finale event wearing a Duke t-shirt, which seemed like a cheeky response to the situation. Speaking about it on the Prestige Junkie podcast, Isaacs explained the story behind the shirt.
He said that his flight was canceled and the airline took his bags, so he had no clothes to wear the next morning. The only store at Charlotte Airport had Duke t-shirts, so he bought one. He joked that he thought it might be “a little bit of mischief.”
Isaacs said he found the whole situation “a little funny.” He added that he doesn’t like when people get upset over small things and believed the backlash was just someone trying to get attention online.
The Patriot actor also pointed out that some Duke alumni in real life have controversial reputations. He said it was silly to think that a fictional character wearing the logo would cause real harm to the university’s image.
Even after Season 3 ended, The White Lotus is still trending online. Fans continue to talk about the show, especially the drama involving the Ratliff family.
All three seasons of The White Lotus are available to watch on MAX.
