From Chum Darang to Meiyang Chang: TV Actors Who Faced Racism in the Industry

TV Celebs Who Faced Racism: From Chum Darang to Meiyang Chang

Racism is still a serious problem many people face, even in their own country. Some Indian TV celebrities have also spoken out about their experiences with racist behavior. Here are a few well-known names like Chum Darang and Meiyang Chang who shared what they went through.

1. Chum Darang

In a recent chat with BBC India, actress Chum Darang shared that she was once called rude names like “momo” and “chow chow” by some boys at a mall. She said she didn’t know how to react at the time because it was very hurtful.

Chum added that even though she may look different, she is just as Indian as anyone else. She hopes people understand that different looks don’t make someone any less a part of India.

2. Meiyang Chang

Singer and actor Meiyang Chang also spoke about facing racism, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. In an interview with the Times of India, he said some people avoided him and even called him “coronavirus” because of the way he looks.

He agreed that social distancing was important, but name-calling and judgment weren’t fair. Chang, who calls himself “Indian Chinese,” said people need to be more understanding and kind.

3. Tanishaa Mukerji

Tanishaa once shared a shocking experience in the US. She said that a restaurant worker made fun of her and her friends, calling them “fresh off the boat” and asking if they even spoke English.

She told Mid-Day that when she asked for help from the staff, they did nothing. She was deeply hurt and disappointed, especially because it happened in a country known for freedom and equal rights.

4. Satish Shah

Veteran actor Satish Shah once shared an incident that happened at London’s Heathrow Airport. He overheard some airport staff making a racist comment about him. They were surprised that he could afford a first-class ticket and said, “How can they afford first class?”

Satish Shah responded with a confident smile and said, “Because we are Indians.”

5. Rajiv Adatia

During an episode of Celebrity MasterChef, Nikki Tamboli made a comment calling Rajiv Adatia “angrez” (which means foreigner). She said, “Tujhe pata nahi hai kya, angrez?” (You don’t know or what, foreigner?)

After she received criticism for it, Nikki explained that her comment was just a joke and that contestants often tease each other like that. She also said that she and Rajiv had spoken about it and even laughed over how it was taken so seriously.

These stories show that racism still exists in many forms — even in the world of entertainment. But speaking out about it is the first step toward change.
