Katie Thurston from The Bachelorette Gets Emotional About Her Stage 4 Breast Cancer: “Hope Is My Reason to Live”
Former Bachelorette star Katie Thurston has shared her emotional journey with stage 4 breast cancer in her first detailed interview since being diagnosed. In a preview of her appearance on Uncomfortable Conversations with Emmanuel Acho, Katie broke down in tears while talking about how tough things have been.
Katie first announced in February that she has invasive ductal carcinoma, a type of breast cancer. Sadly, the cancer has now spread to her liver and reached stage 4.
Speaking to Emmanuel, Katie said,
“I think the hardest part is being alone. That’s why I’m so thankful for the online community.”
She explained that support from people online, especially cancer survivors, gives her strength. Her husband, comedian Jeff Arcuri, often travels for work, so Katie sometimes has to go through treatments by herself.
“I can’t imagine doing this completely alone,” she said. Katie shared that hearing from cancer survivors who went through the same thing makes a huge difference.
“It’s amazing to hear support from friends and fans, but when a survivor tells me, ‘I was on that same treatment 15 years ago,’ that gives me real hope,” she said with emotion.
When Emmanuel asked her if hope was what she needed most right now, Katie replied without hesitation: “Yes.”
She said hope gives people a reason to live, something to look forward to. Without it, life feels even harder. Katie explained that hope, support, and having a purpose are what keep her going during her treatment and all the uncertainty.
In a video posted to Instagram on April 10, Katie gave an update on her treatment plan. She shared that she won’t be doing chemotherapy right now. Instead, she’ll be starting hormone-blocking therapy, which doctors believe is a better option for long-term control with fewer side effects.
She mentioned that chemo could still be used later if needed.
“If this treatment stops working or the cancer grows, we’ll consider chemo again,” she wrote in the caption.
