Dino Morea: Raaz Outshone Devdas at the Box Office?

EXCLUSIVE: Dino Morea says Raaz made more money than Shah Rukh Khan’s Devdas, wants to return for its sequel

In an exclusive chat with Pinkvilla, actor Dino Morea shared that his horror film Raaz, which starred Bipasha Basu, was actually more profitable than Shah Rukh Khan’s big-budget film Devdas, which also released in the same year — 2002.

Talking about Raaz, Dino said that the movie was a huge hit even though there was no social media back then. He explained, “Raaz was a massive success. If you look at that year, Shah Rukh Khan’s Devdas was also released, which was a grand film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. But if you compare the cost of making both movies and the money they earned, Raaz was actually the more successful one.”

He added, “We spent less money on Raaz and still earned more. But even then, we only got two awards, and none of them were for the songs. That movie had such hit songs like Jo Bhi Kasmein and Aapke Pyaar Mein — people still listen to them today — and still, we got no award for music.”

Dino admitted that Devdas had a much bigger perception because of its star cast — Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai — and grand visuals. But when it came to profit, Raaz clearly won.

Apart from this, Dino also shared his wish to return in a proper sequel to the original Raaz. He said, “I even spoke to Mukesh ji, the producer. I asked him why we can’t make a sequel that starts from where Raaz ended — what happens next in Bipasha’s and my character’s story?”

He also revealed that he already has an idea for the sequel’s plot. “I’ve thought of a story that continues from where we left off and brings it into the modern world. If we get permission and rights, I’d love to make it. I’m ready with the idea,” he added.
