Pope Francis Death: Understanding Ancient Traditions and Conclave Rituals

Pope Francis Death: What Black and White Smoke Mean and Old Traditions That Follow

The world is mourning the death of Pope Francis, the first Latin American Pope. After his passing, the Catholic Church will follow several old traditions and rituals that have been practiced for centuries.

One of the most well-known signs during this time is the black and white smoke seen from the Sistine Chapel chimney. But what do these smoke signals mean? And what other customs are followed after a Pope dies? Let’s understand them.

What happens after a Pope dies?

After the Pope passes away, a Papal Conclave is held to choose the next Pope. This meeting is secret and takes place inside the Vatican. The voting is done by the College of Cardinals, which currently has 252 members, but only 136 cardinals are allowed to vote in the conclave.

What do black and white smoke signals mean?

During the conclave, four rounds of voting are held each day.

  • If black smoke comes out of the chapel’s chimney, it means the cardinals have not agreed on a new Pope.
This smoke is made by burning a mix of potassium perchlorate, anthracene, and sulfur.
  • If white smoke appears, it means the cardinals have elected a new Pope.
The white smoke is created using potassium chlorate, lactose, and rosin.

These smoke signals help the public know if a decision has been made or not.

Who looks after the Church until a new Pope is chosen?

Until a new Pope is selected, the Church is temporarily led by the Camerlengo and two other senior cardinals.

The Camerlengo’s duties include:

  • Confirming the Pope’s death
  • Informing the Cardinal Vicar of Rome
  • Sealing off the Pope’s private rooms

Cardinal Kevin Farrell is currently the Camerlengo, and Baldassare Reina is the Cardinal Vicar of the Roman Diocese.

Who could be the next Pope?

Some of the top names being discussed as possible successors to Pope Francis include:

  • Peter Turkson
  • Luis Antonio Tagle
  • Pietro Parolin
  • Peter Erdo

The mourning period and funeral traditions

After a Pope’s death, the Vatican follows a nine-day mourning period called Novemdiales. This tradition comes from ancient Roman customs.

Reports say Pope Francis will be buried in a single, simple wooden casket, which will be lined with zinc. This is different from past Popes, who were usually buried in three coffins – one each of cypress, lead, and oak.
