WATCH: Why Elvish Yadav Apologised to Actress Chum Darang After NCW Summons – All You Need to Know
YouTuber and Bigg Boss OTT 2 winner Elvish Yadav recently faced major backlash for making a racist remark about actress Chum Darang, known from Bigg Boss 18 and Heeramandi. After public outrage and an official complaint, Elvish was summoned by the National Commission for Women (NCW) and has now issued a public apology.
What Happened?
During a podcast with guest Rajat Dalal, Elvish joked:
“Karan Veer must have had COVID—who would like Chum? Who has such bad taste! Even her name is vulgar. Her name is Chum, and she acted in Gangubai Kathiawadi.”
The comment was widely criticised as racist and disrespectful, targeting both Chum’s name and her North‑East Indian background.
Reaction from Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Commission
- Chum Darang condemned the comment, saying it mocked her identity and achievements.
- The Arunachal Pradesh State Women’s Commission (APSWC) wrote to the NCW, demanding action, stating the remark insulted “all women from the North‑East.”
Elvish Appears Before NCW and Apologises
On 22 April, Elvish met NCW officials in Delhi. Afterward he told reporters:
“As you grow, you gain maturity. If people felt hurt by my words, then I must have said something wrong. I have apologised—I hold no grudge against anyone.”
A video of his statement (see above) shows him admitting fault and expressing regret.
Current Projects
Despite the controversy, Elvish is currently appearing in the comedy show Laughter Chefs.
Note: Racist or derogatory remarks can cause real harm. Public figures are being increasingly held accountable for their words, and official bodies such as the NCW can intervene when complaints arise.
