India’s Got Latent Controversy: Why Did the Supreme Court Summon Samay Raina Again? Here’s What Happened
Comedian Samay Raina is in trouble once more over his show India’s Got Latent. The Supreme Court has asked him and five others to appear in person because of their controversial and hurtful comments made on the show.
According to reports, a case was filed by an NGO claiming that Samay and the others made fun of people with disabilities. The court took this seriously. A bench led by Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh ordered that Samay Raina, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakar (also known as Sonali Aditya Desai), and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar must be present at the next hearing. The Mumbai Police Commissioner has also been told to make sure they show up.
The judges warned that if they don’t attend the hearing, strict action will be taken. Justice Kant said, “We will not allow hate speech or any speech that insults others. If this kind of freedom exists, we will stop it.”
The complaint was made by the Cure SMA Foundation of India, which supports people with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). They said Samay made unacceptable comments about a blind person and a baby who had SMA. That baby needed ₹16 crore for medical treatment.
The NGO has also asked the court to ban digital content that is insulting or harmful to people with disabilities. They want strong rules to protect the dignity of disabled people in online spaces.
Senior lawyer Aparajita Singh, speaking for the NGO, said that the remarks made by these influencers were “deeply hurtful” and could badly affect how society views people with disabilities. She explained that when influencers make such jokes, they shape how young people think and behave.
Because of the backlash, all episodes of India’s Got Latent have been taken down.
