EXCLUSIVE: Anjula Acharia Says Priyanka Chopra Was Meant to Be a Global Star — Here’s How She Helped Her Enter Hollywood
Anjula Acharia, one of the top names in business and entertainment, recently appeared on the cover of Billboard. In an exclusive chat with Pinkvilla, she shared how she helped Priyanka Chopra Jonas step into Hollywood and talked about her journey of bringing more South Asian artists into the global spotlight.
“Priyanka Was Born to Be a Global Star”
Anjula said that when she first met Priyanka, she knew right away that she had the talent and charm to be a global icon. “She had everything—brains, beauty, talent, and that special spark,” she said.
At the time, there were very few South Asian faces in Hollywood, and many people doubted it could be done. But Anjula stayed confident. “Even though people were skeptical, I believed in her and didn’t give up,” she added.
The Start: Music First, Then Acting
Anjula first planned to launch Priyanka as a music artist. She signed her to her label with the help of music industry legend Jimmy Iovine. But soon, they realized that acting was Priyanka’s true passion.
That’s when Anjula negotiated a deal with ABC, and Priyanka got the lead role in Quantico. “Once America saw her, they loved her,” Anjula said. From there, Priyanka started appearing on the covers of major magazines and became a household name.

Their First Meeting — A Funny Memory
Anjula recalled their first-ever conversation. Priyanka was in the middle of a jungle shooting a serious film, and they spoke on a satellite phone. “She was very quiet, and I thought I had messed it up,” Anjula laughed. “But later, I found out she was just listening carefully and was impressed.”
Aiming for Global Representation
Anjula also spoke about her work with AR Rahman on the Jai Ho remix. She called him a musical genius and said the West has begun to recognize his brilliance.
When asked about the rise of Punjabi stars like Diljit Dosanjh and Karan Aujla, she said their music is catchy. “Even if you don’t understand the language, you can still enjoy the beat—just like people do with Spanish songs.”
She also said she hopes to see another global hit like Beware of the Boys by Jay-Z and Punjabi MC.
A Full-Circle Moment at Buckingham Palace
Anjula shared that growing up in the UK, she faced racism. That experience made her determined to create space for South Asian representation in global pop culture. So when King Charles invited her to the Humanitarian Reception at Buckingham Palace, it was a proud moment. “It felt like everything had come full circle,” she said.
What’s Next?
Anjula said she’s now focused on introducing the next generation of global pop stars through her label. She revealed that their first single is releasing soon, and she’s excited to lead the wave of South Asian talent making it big in the U.S.
