Sitaare Zameen Par EXCLUSIVE: Aamir Khan Says His Next Film Is About Mental Health; ‘When You See My Character, You’ll Understand’

In an exclusive chat with Pinkvilla, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan talked about his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, revealing some exciting details about it.

In a recent conversation with Pinkvilla, Aamir Khan shared what he’s working on next. He said, “My next film Sitaare Zameen Par is ready. We’ve decided to release it on June 20.” During the chat, Aamir’s daughter, Ira Khan, also jumped in for a moment, saying, “Neurodivergent peer support, in case anyone is interested,” hinting at the film’s mental health theme.

Aamir then explained more about the film. He said, “Actually, this film is about mental health in many ways. When you see my character, you’ll understand what I mean. Right now, I’m busy working on it. Fingers crossed!”

This update has made fans even more excited for Sitaare Zameen Par, which is being called a spiritual sequel to Aamir’s 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. While Taare Zameen Par was an emotional story about a boy with dyslexia, Sitaare Zameen Par is said to be a lighter and funnier film, but it will still focus on mental health and inclusion.

In another interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Aamir described Sitaare Zameen Par as “a beautiful story.” He said, “Taare Zameen Par made you cry. Sitaare Zameen Par will make you laugh. Both talk about people who have different abilities or challenges, but this time, it’s through humor instead of heavy emotions.”

He also said that Sitaare Zameen Par takes the idea further than Taare Zameen Par. He explained, “In Taare Zameen Par, my character helped Ishaan, the boy with challenges. But in Sitaare Zameen Par, it’s ten people with challenges who help my character — a so-called ‘normal’ person. So in a way, the message goes even deeper. I hope it all turns out well.”

For those who remember, Taare Zameen Par was not just a hit at the box office but also changed how people in India talked about learning disorders, especially dyslexia. It starred Darsheel Safary as Ishaan and Aamir Khan as the kind-hearted art teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh. The film won three National Film Awards and is still remembered fondly.

Sitaare Zameen Par was officially announced in October 2023. It is directed by RS Prasanna and promises a new take while staying true to the topic of celebrating people with special abilities. The film stars Aamir Khan, Darsheel Safary, and Genelia Deshmukh in important roles. Interestingly, it is inspired by the 2018 Spanish film Champions, which also focused on neurodiversity and acceptance.

Sitaare Zameen Par will hit theaters on June 20, 2025.
