Amar Upadhyay Remembers Fan Outrage After Mihir Virani’s Death

Amar Upadhyay, a well-known actor in the Indian television industry, recently shared a memorable story about his character, Mihir Virani, from the popular show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. In a recent interview, he recalled how fans reacted wildly when his character was killed off in the show.

Amar revealed that the fan reaction was so intense that it led to some surprising and extreme actions. He shared, “People showed up at my office and even at my house. When Mihir was killed off, they thought I had actually died. Some women came to my house in white sarees, mourning my death. My mother had to ask them to leave.”

Amar also remembered how, on February 8, 2001, after the episode aired, he went to meet the show’s producer, Ektaa Kapoor. He said that his phone kept ringing nonstop, with people from all over India calling in shock. “They kept asking, ‘How could you kill him?’ and I would tell them, ‘I’m alive!’” Amar said. It was such a big deal that it made front-page news the next day.

Although Amar was initially upset about his character’s death, the fans’ outrage forced the makers to bring Mihir Virani back on the show. He recalled that many women even threw stones at the building of Balaji Telefilms (the production company) and at the guards. The public anger was so strong that the Star Plus server crashed due to the massive number of emails they received, even more than Kaun Banega Crorepati. The outrage lasted for about a week, and the producers decided to bring his character back.

Amar also shared that he eventually left the show in 2002 to focus on his film career, as the workload in television became too much. He was firm in his decision and didn’t have any doubts about it. Despite leaving the show, Amar mentioned that the Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi cast still stays in touch through WhatsApp, although some cast members like Ronit Roy and Smriti Irani aren’t part of the group anymore.

Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi aired from 2000 to 2008 and starred popular actors like Smriti Irani, Ronit Roy, Mandira Bedi, and Hiten Tejwani in key roles.
