Baby Reindeer Star Richard Gadd Opens Up About the ‘Overwhelming Pressure’ of Fame

Richard Gadd, the star and creator of Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, recently talked about how hard it has been to deal with the pressure and fame that came with the show’s success. In the popular mini-series, Gadd plays Donny, a role based on his own life. As the show heads into the BAFTA TV Awards with six nominations, Gadd opened up about his struggles.

In an interview, he said,
“There have been a lot of challenging moments. The show has become so huge — sometimes it’s felt like the pressure was just too much. It’s been like a hurricane.”

He continued,
“I don’t think I’m in a place yet where I can reflect on everything. I need a proper break to get grounded again. Right now, I feel very overwhelmed.”

Gadd shared that the show was released on a Sunday, and by Thursday, fans were already showing up at his door asking for autographs. He admitted he’s still adjusting to the sudden fame.

“I used to be an arthouse comedian, performing in front of just five people a night. So, all of this is a massive change for me. Even going to the supermarket now feels complicated.”

Meanwhile, the show has also faced controversy. Fiona Harvey, who says she was portrayed as the stalker in Baby Reindeer, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Netflix. She claims the story was not true and has called it “the biggest lie in television history.”
