EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: What Balasaheb Thackeray Did When Abhijeet Sawant Was Called ‘Homeless’
Abhijeet Sawant, the winner of the very first season of Indian Idol, recently spoke to Pinkvilla’s Hindi Rush in an exclusive chat. During the interview, he shared a surprising and emotional story about a time when he was labeled “homeless” in a newspaper—and how the late Balasaheb Thackeray responded with an unexpected gesture of kindness.
The ‘Homeless’ Headline
Abhijeet remembered living with his family in a BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) quarters. He said a journalist once visited their home and noticed a warning sign outside the building that said the structure was unsafe to live in. The sign read: “This building is not safe. You are living here at your own risk.”
He explained, “That sign is still there even today. But the building hasn’t collapsed—it’s still standing.” After seeing the notice, the journalist asked him about it during their conversation. Abhijeet explained they were already planning to move and were looking for a new home.
But soon after that visit, a big Mumbai newspaper published an article on the front page with the headline: “Abhijeet Sawant Homeless.” The singer laughed while recalling this moment, saying, “It wasn’t a small newspaper—it was a major one!”
Balasaheb Thackeray’s Response
Abhijeet then shared something truly heartwarming. After reading the article, Balasaheb Thackeray personally called him and invited him to his home. “When I went to meet him, he told me, ‘I read that article. I know a builder. I’ll call him, and he’ll give you the keys to a house. It’s yours—keep it.’”
Abhijeet was touched by the offer but politely refused, telling Balasaheb, “Sir, thank you, but I’ve already booked a house. I’ve made the advance payment. I’m still living in my old home because I like it there.”
What Is Abhijeet Up To Now?
Abhijeet, who also appeared on Bigg Boss Marathi 5, was last seen as a contestant on Celebrity MasterChef.
This story shows how even a simple newspaper article can spark unexpected acts of kindness—and how staying grounded, like Abhijeet did, is just as important as fame.
