Ben Affleck had just returned to Los Angeles after dropping off his daughter Violet at college when news broke that Jennifer Lopez had filed for divorce. According to TMZ, Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday, August 20. She listed the separation date as August 26, 2024, and filed the papers herself without a lawyer.
Tuesday was also the second anniversary of the couple’s traditional wedding in Georgia. Before that, they had eloped to Las Vegas in July to get married.
Just before Lopez’s filing, Affleck was seen returning to Los Angeles with Jennifer Garner after taking their eldest daughter, Violet, 18, to Yale University in Connecticut. After landing, they got into a car and left together, according to People.
On Monday, August 19, a source told People that Affleck had been very focused on getting Violet ready for college, despite his marital issues with Lopez. The source added that it was a big moment for the family, and they had been excited in the weeks leading up to it.
Earlier, on August 15, Affleck celebrated his 52nd birthday with his kids before they went back to school after summer break. Lopez even stopped by his rental home in Brentwood, California, to congratulate him. According to another source, Affleck’s birthday was exactly how he wanted it—he spent most of the day at home with his kids, who had gifts for him, making it a simple but special family occasion.
Affleck and Garner, who divorced in 2018, also share two other children: Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12.
