Dia Mirza’s Emotional Story: Avyaan’s Life-Saving Surgery Revealed

“I Couldn’t Hold Him Until…”: Dia Mirza Opens Up About Her Son Avyaan’s Life-Saving Surgery

Becoming a mother is a beautiful experience, but it’s not always easy. In a recent interview, Bollywood actress Dia Mirza shared the emotional and painful journey she went through during her pregnancy with her son, Avyaan Azaad Rekhi, who was born in 2021.

A Complicated and Risky Pregnancy

Dia revealed that her pregnancy at the age of 39 came with serious complications. She developed a bacterial infection, possibly due to an appendix surgery she had during her fifth month. By the sixth month, things got worse—her placenta started bleeding, and her body was going into sepsis, a life-threatening infection.

“The doctors told me that if the baby wasn’t delivered immediately, neither of us would survive,” she said. It was a scary situation. All Dia wanted was for her baby to survive.

Avyaan’s Early Birth and First Surgery

Avyaan was born prematurely and weighed just 810 grams. Dia was on heavy IV antibiotics at the time, as doctors were treating the dangerous bacteria in her body. Just 36 hours after birth, little Avyaan had to undergo a life-saving surgery—he had a hole in his intestine.

Explaining the procedure, Dia shared, “They created a stoma. They pulled a part of his intestine outside his body and left it exposed.” She remained on antibiotics for 21 days while her newborn fought for his life in the ICU.

COVID-19 Made It Even Harder

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, Dia was only allowed to visit Avyaan twice a week, which made things even harder for her emotionally. She said she couldn’t hold her son until he weighed at least 2.5 kg. Once he was strong enough, they brought him home for 20 days.

When Avyaan finally reached 3.5 kg, doctors did a second surgery to fix the stoma, and the worst was finally behind them.

A Journey of Strength and Grace

Dia spoke lovingly about her son and revealed she’s writing a book for him, where she’s documenting her entire pregnancy journey and the challenges they faced. She said, “Avyaan has taught me grace. It takes a lot of strength and grace to go through such pain and still smile.”

Her Family Life

For those who don’t know, Dia was earlier married to her business partner Sahil Sangha, but they separated in 2019. In 2021, she married businessman Vaibhav Rekhi, and they welcomed Avyaan the same year. Dia is also stepmother to Samaira, Vaibhav’s daughter from his previous marriage.
