5 Times India’s Got Latent Landed in Controversy – From Jokes About Deepika Padukone to Uorfi Javed Walking Out
The comedy talent show India’s Got Latent, hosted by comedian Samay Raina, has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. Launched in June 2024, the show has repeatedly sparked controversy due to offensive jokes about mental health, disabilities, and cultural stereotypes. The latest controversy involves a remark by YouTuber and entrepreneur Ranveer Allahbadia, which has triggered backlash from both the public and authorities. But this isn’t the first time the show has faced outrage. Here are five major controversies that landed India’s Got Latent in trouble.
1. Insensitive Jokes About Disabilities Spark Legal Action
In September 2024, the show faced severe criticism for jokes targeting people with physical disabilities and speech disorders. The issue arose after comedian Santosh Patra performed a stand-up set that many found offensive. To make matters worse, the judges, including Samay Raina, laughed and even gave him a standing ovation.
This led to legal action by Dr. Satyendra Singh, a medical professional from Delhi’s Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital. He filed a complaint against the judges—Nishant Tanwar, Vipul Goyal, and Sonali Thakker—as well as Santosh Patra, accusing them of discrimination and defamation.
2. Jokes About Deepika Padukone’s Depression
In November 2024, the show stirred controversy again when contestant Bunti Banerjee made an insensitive remark about Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone’s battle with depression. During his stand-up set, Banerjee joked, “Deepika Padukone recently became a mother, right? Now she finally knows what real depression looks like.”
The audience and judges laughed at the joke, and Banerjee further added, “I’m not trying to insult breakup-wala depression… actually, I am.” This remark sparked public outrage, with many criticizing the show for making fun of mental health issues.
3. Offensive Stereotypes About Arunachal Pradesh
Before the Ranveer Allahbadia controversy, the show was criticized for an insensitive comment about Arunachal Pradesh. Contestant Jessy Nabam, a native of the state, joked that people from Arunachal eat dog meat, including their own pets.
The remark angered many, leading to an official complaint from a resident of Arunachal Pradesh. Reports later confirmed that an FIR had been filed against the contestant for promoting harmful stereotypes.
4. Uorfi Javed Walks Off the Set
Fashion influencer Uorfi Javed made headlines when she stormed off the show after a contestant compared her to adult film star Mia Khalifa and made personal comments about her life.
Feeling disrespected and slut-shamed, Uorfi expressed her disappointment in the way the situation was handled. However, she later clarified that she is still on good terms with her friend and the show’s host, Samay Raina.
5. Ranveer Allahbadia’s Controversial Remark
The latest controversy surrounding India’s Got Latent involves YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, who made an inappropriate comment about watching parents engage in intimate acts. This remark has sparked massive outrage, with both the public and government authorities demanding action against the show.
With India’s Got Latent repeatedly facing backlash, it remains to be seen how the show will handle the growing controversies.
