India’s Got Latent Controversy: Why Has the Supreme Court Summoned Samay Raina Again? Here’s What You Need to Know

Stand-up comedian Samay Raina and his show India’s Got Latent are in the spotlight again—this time due to serious legal trouble. The Supreme Court has summoned Samay and four others for allegedly making offensive remarks about people with disabilities.

What’s the Issue?

According to a report by ETimes TV, the Supreme Court has asked Samay Raina and four more individuals to appear in person at the next hearing. The court is responding to a petition filed by an NGO called Cure SMA Foundation of India. The organization works for people affected by a rare condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

The complaint says that Samay and his team made fun of disabled people during their show, which the NGO says is not only hurtful but also unacceptable. The show reportedly included jokes about a blind person and a two-month-old baby who has SMA. The child’s family had been trying to raise ₹16 crore for treatment.

What Did the Supreme Court Say?

The case is being heard by a bench led by Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh. The judges also directed the Mumbai Police Commissioner to make sure that Samay Raina, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakar (also known as Sonali Aditya Desai), and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar appear in court.

The court gave a clear warning: if they don’t show up, strict action will be taken. Justice Kant stated, “Hate speech or speech meant to insult others… if this kind of freedom exists, we will restrict it.”

What Is the Petition Asking For?

The Cure SMA Foundation is urging the court to ban digital content that mocks or disrespects people with disabilities. They also want strict rules to be introduced to protect the dignity and rights of disabled individuals in online content.

Senior lawyer Aparajita Singh, representing the NGO, told the court that the jokes were “deeply damaging and discouraging” for people with disabilities. She added that influencers like Samay have a strong impact on young people, and their words can shape public opinion.

What Happened to the Show?

After public backlash and the legal notice, all episodes of India’s Got Latent have been taken down.
