James Gunn Confirms The Batman 2 Is Still Happening: “It’s Really Important”
There’s good news for fans of The Batman! Director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn has confirmed that The Batman 2 is still very much in the works. Despite rumors saying the film might be canceled, Gunn says it’s an important part of the Batman trilogy. And yes — Robert Pattinson will return as the Caped Crusader.
The Batman 2 Is Safe, Says James Gunn
While promoting his upcoming Superman movie, Gunn spoke to Entertainment Weekly and directly addressed the future of The Batman sequel.
He said,
“What Matt’s doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary.”
He also shared some exciting news:
“We’re supposed to see that script shortly, and I can’t wait.”

So, even though there’s been a delay, the film is still moving forward with Matt Reeves as director and Pattinson back as Batman.
Why the Wait for The Batman 2?
The first Batman movie starring Robert Pattinson came out in 2022. But fans will have to wait five years for the next part, which is expected to release in 2027.
Some fans were worried this long gap meant the sequel was in trouble. Gunn addressed that on social media, saying,
“To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels.”
He gave examples:
- 7 years between Terminator films
- 13 years between Avatar and Avatar 2
- 6 years between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Vol. 3
Gunn also explained that once a script is ready, it takes nearly two years for big movies to go through pre-production, filming, and post-production.
Pattinson Jokes About Aging Into the Role
Earlier, while promoting Mickey 17, Robert Pattinson joked about the long wait. He said,
“I started out as young Batman, and I’m going to be old Batman by the sequel. I’m 38. I’m old.”
Still, he’s clearly excited to return. He added,
“I know what it’s about, but I can’t tell anyone. It’s very cool. It’s very exciting.”
What’s Next for DC?
While fans wait for The Batman 2, DC’s next big film — Superman starring David Corenswet — is set to hit theaters on July 11.
So, despite delays and rumors, The Batman 2 is very much alive, and we’ll likely get more updates soon.
