KBC 16 Controversy: Amitabh Bachchan’s Zubeida Gaffe Sparks Outrage

Kaun Banega Crorepati 16: Amitabh Bachchan’s Mistake Over Actress Zubeida’s Identity Upsets Her Son Khalid Mohammed

In a recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 16, hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, a mix-up about the actress Zubeida sparked controversy. The show made an error in a question about Zubeida, who starred in Alam Ara, India’s first talking film. The episode aired on November 30, 2024, with actor Varun Dhawan and the creators of Citadel: Honey Bunny as special guests. However, Zubeida’s son, Khalid Mohammed, criticized the show for this mistake.

During the episode, Amitabh Bachchan asked Varun Dhawan and director Raj Nidimoru, “Which actress tragically passed away in a plane crash with her husband, Maharaja Hanwant Singh of Jodhpur?” The options included Sulochana, Mumtaz, Nadira, and Zubeida. After using two lifelines, including a call to the writer of Citadel: Honey Bunny, Varun and Raj chose Zubeida, which the show marked as correct. Bachchan then explained that actress Zubeida married Maharaja Hanwant Singh and died in a plane crash, adding that her life inspired the movie Zubeidaa, starring Karisma Kapoor.

However, the show confused two different people. The actress Zubeida featured in Alam Ara was not the wife of Hanwant Singh. Khalid Mohammed, the real-life son of Zubeida, clarified that his mother was actually married to Maharaj Narsingir Dhanrajgir Gyan Bahadur of Hyderabad, not Hanwant Singh.

After the episode, Khalid Mohammed expressed his frustration on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, “This is my late mother Zubeida Begum. She wasn’t born when Alam Ara was made. An apology on the program for the gaffe would be the least you could do.” He also criticized the show’s research team for not checking this sensitive information properly.

In a follow-up post, Khalid clarified further, saying, “Kaun Banega Crorepati… Whoever calls the shots, may I request a clarification on KBC. Zubeida (Dhanrajgir) was the renowned actress who featured in Alam Ara. Not my maa Zubeida, who did wish to act but wasn’t permitted by her strict father. How could your research team make such a gaffe?”

Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 16 airs Monday to Friday at 9 PM on Sony TV.
