Radhika Apte on Challenges for New Moms in Industry: ‘Really Difficult

Radhika Apte Says Film Industry Is Tough for New Moms Amid Deepika Padukone-Sandeep Reddy Vanga Controversy

Amid the controversy surrounding Deepika Padukone’s exit from director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s upcoming film Spirit, actress Radhika Apte has shared her own concerns — especially as a new mother. She openly admitted that the film industry is not supportive of the needs of new moms, saying, “It’s really difficult.”

Radhika Apte Opens Up About Being a New Mother in the Industry

Radhika, who became a mother in December 2024, had earlier announced her pregnancy in style by showing off her baby bump on the red carpet at the BAFTA Awards. She attended the event as her British film Sister Midnight was nominated in the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer category. She shares a baby girl with her husband Benedict Taylor.

In a recent interview with SCREEN, Radhika was asked whether the film industry is welcoming toward new mothers. She answered honestly:
“I don’t think they are. I don’t know how I’m going to manage this moving forward.”

She explained that actors usually work for very long hours, which makes it tough for them to spend time with their children.
“It’s really difficult to work in our film industry — the shoot hours are long, and there’s barely time to be with your child. So I guess I’ll have to figure it out now,” she added.

Deepika Padukone Controversy: What Happened?

Radhika’s comments come just days after Bollywood Hungama reported that Deepika Padukone was removed from Spirit because of what were labeled as “unprofessional demands.” According to the report, Deepika had asked for a 6-hour workday limit and requested extra payment if the shoot went beyond 100 days.

This led to mixed reactions in the industry. Actor Ajay Devgn, during the trailer launch of his film Maa, came out in support of such demands. He said that many honest filmmakers are now okay with actors asking for reasonable working hours, and that 8–9 hour workdays are becoming more common.

Radhika’s Film Sister Midnight Hits Indian Theaters

Meanwhile, Radhika Apte’s film Sister Midnight, which was earlier released in the UK and US, has now come to Indian theaters. Fans can finally watch the film on the big screen.
