Did Rajinikanth Watch Karthik Subbaraj’s Retro Starring Suriya? Director Reveals Thalaivar’s Reaction to the Trailer

Karthik Subbaraj, a long-time fan of superstar Rajinikanth, recently spoke about whether Thalaivar has seen his latest film Retro, starring Suriya. The director and Rajinikanth have worked together in the past, and Karthik still holds the legendary actor in high regard.

In a recent interview with Behindwoods, Karthik shared that Rajinikanth has watched the teaser and trailer of Retro but hasn’t seen the full movie yet. Karthik added that he is looking forward to showing the film to Rajinikanth once the actor is done shooting for Jailer 2.

He said, “I will definitely show Retro to Superstar Rajinikanth once he gets free from Jailer 2 shoot. I already showed him the teaser and trailer. He said it was superb and wished me well.”

Interestingly, Karthik Subbaraj also revealed earlier that Retro was originally written for Rajinikanth. The first version of the script was a full-on action film, made to suit Rajinikanth’s style. But when Karthik narrated it to Suriya, it was reworked into a romantic action story. Even Suriya asked if the script was first offered to Rajinikanth!

Speaking about that, Karthik had said, “I had Thalaivar in mind when I wrote the script. It was initially more action-based. After I narrated it to Suriya sir, we turned it into a love story. Suriya sir even asked me if I had told Rajinikanth sir about it.”

Retro was released in cinemas on May 1, 2025, and clashed with Nani’s film, HIT – The Third Case. Despite the clash, Retro has performed well and earned ₹20.5 crore in just two days.

The film stars Suriya, along with Pooja Hegde, Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, Prakash Raj, Karunakaran, Swasika, Sujith Shankar, and others.

Retro tells the story of Paari, an orphan raised by a gangster. As he tries to escape a world of betrayal and violence, he fights for a better life and hopes to reunite with his true love, Rukmani.
