Raveena Tandon, Farah Khan Get Temporary Legal Relief: Case Details Inside

Raveena Tandon, Farah Khan Get Temporary Legal Relief in Old Case — Here’s What Happened

Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon, filmmaker Farah Khan, and a few others have received temporary legal relief in a case filed against them five years ago. The case accused them of hurting religious sentiments. Now, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has paused the investigation process and said they don’t need to appear for questioning until the next hearing, which is on July 14.

What Did the Court Say?

The decision came from a bench led by Justice Manisha Batra. The court was told that officials had started sending fresh notices under Section 35 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), calling them in for more questioning. The judge stopped this and said, “Till the next date of hearing, no such step shall be taken.” (as reported by The Tribune).

Who Is Defending Them?

A team of senior lawyers is helping Raveena, Farah, and others. The legal team includes well-known advocate Akshay Bhan, along with Abhinav Sood, Anmol Gupta, Mehndi Singhal, and others. They argued that the charges under Section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code — which punishes people for hurting religious feelings on purpose — were not valid in this case.

What Is the Case About?

The case goes back to December 25, 2019, when an FIR (First Information Report) was filed at the Ajnala police station. It accused Raveena Tandon, Farah Khan, comedian Bharti Singh, writer Abbas Ajij Dalal, and the show’s production company, Frames Production, of hurting religious sentiments.

According to reports, the complaints were related to an episode of Farah Khan’s talk show Backbenchers. In the show, celebrities were asked to spell and explain some words. During the episode, Bharti Singh misspelled a word, which led to people thinking she was making fun of a religion.

What Does the Legal Team Say?

The lawyers say the entire issue was misunderstood. They argue that no one on the show had any intention to insult any religion. They also said the complaints were exaggerated and didn’t hold up under the law.

Earlier, the High Court had already stopped any arrests linked to the FIRs. But some of the people involved were later sent new summons and asked to join the investigation. Now, those summons have also been put on hold until the next hearing on July 14.
