The docu-series Angry Young Men, featuring the legendary Bollywood writer duo Salim-Javed, has started streaming on Prime Video. In the third episode, the Khan family shares their experiences of how Salim Khan introduced Helen, his second wife, to the family, and how Salma Khan, his first wife, handled the situation with grace.
Arbaaz Khan revealed that his mother, Salma Khan, never spoke negatively about Helen or Salim Khan. He said, “My mother never influenced us to think or say anything against our father. She had her troubles, but she never made us think, ‘Your dad is like this,’ or, ‘This is what he is doing.’ Never.”
Arbaaz also mentioned that all the children still call Helen “aunty” because that’s what they called her when she first came into their lives. “Though we treat her as a mother, we call her Helen Aunty. She is part of our lives,” Arbaaz added, noting that it is Salma Khan who ensures Helen is included in everything.
For those who may not know, Salim Khan married Sushila Charak (now Salma Khan) in 1964, and they have four children together—three sons, Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, and Sohail Khan, and one daughter, Alvira. In 1981, Salim married Helen Ann Richardson, and the couple later adopted a baby girl named Arpita.
In the docu-series, Salim Khan also recalled the moment he informed his family about Helen. He said, “I sat all the kids down and discussed it with them. I told them, ‘You won’t understand it now, but you will get it when you’re older. I am in love with Helen Aunty, and I know you can’t love her as much as you love your mother, but I want the same respect for her.’”
Salim and Helen first met on the sets of the film Kabli Khan, where Salim played a villain and Helen was the heroine. However, they didn’t interact much at the time. It wasn’t until they met again on the sets of Amitabh Bachchan’s Don that they began to talk, and from there, their relationship grew.
