Shark Tank India 4: Namita Thapar and Anupam Mittal Call Out Founders for Misleading Numbers
The latest episode of Shark Tank India 4 had its fair share of drama as Namita Thapar and Anupam Mittal confronted a group of founders for major issues in their financial claims. The trio, who pitched their startup Ezo, left the Sharks unimpressed after their numbers and accounting methods raised serious concerns.
The Pitch
The founders of Ezo, hailing from Maharashtra, explained their business idea. They sell billing machines to shopkeepers and earn revenue through a subscription model. Confidently, they claimed their company was on track to hit ₹30 crore in revenue this year. But their big projections made the Sharks question their data.
The Problem
During the discussion, the Sharks uncovered serious problems with the company’s financial practices. Anupam Mittal and Namita Thapar found out that the founders were using unethical accounting methods, raising doubts about their transparency. Namita even broke down the difference between two key accounting methods—cash accounting and accrual accounting—to highlight the issues.
Anupam, clearly frustrated, remarked, “Puri daal hi kaali hai boss” (everything seems fishy). When the founders claimed the errors were unintentional, Anupam refused to believe them. He said, “You’re a pro; don’t pretend you didn’t know what you were doing.” Namita agreed, calling out the inflated numbers as not just an accounting issue but an integrity issue.
No Deal
With trust broken, the Sharks decided not to invest. Namita and Ritesh Sidhwani showed no interest, while Aman Gupta offered advice instead of a deal. He told the founders, “Gadbad se paise mat kamao” (don’t earn money through dishonest means).
The Ezo founders left the stage without a deal, marking the second no-deal pitch of the episode.
Takeaway
The episode served as a reminder of how critical honesty and transparency are in business, especially when pitching to investors. It also showcased the Sharks’ commitment to ethical entrepreneurship.
