Shubhangi Atre Shares the Real Reason for Her Divorce from Late Ex-Husband Piyush Poorey: “Our Separation Was Because of…”

Actress Shubhangi Atre’s ex-husband, Piyush Poorey, passed away at the age of 48 on April 16, 2025, after battling liver cirrhosis. His sudden death has left Shubhangi feeling deeply emotional and numb. In a new interview, she shared that she had spoken to Piyush on the day he passed away. She also opened up about why they separated.
In a conversation with ETimes TV, Shubhangi said she would soon travel to Indore to be with Piyush’s family. She said, “I’m emotional and numb right now. I want to remember Piyush for all the good memories. I’ll be going to Indore soon to be with his family.” She also shared that their daughter, Ashi, who is currently studying in the US, will return to Mumbai after her final exams, and then they will both go to Indore.
After the news of Piyush’s death came out, some people criticized Shubhangi online. She spoke about this in the interview, saying that many people judge without knowing the full story. She revealed that their divorce was not because of her success, but because of Piyush’s alcohol addiction.
The Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain actress said, “People think I left him because I became successful, but that’s not true. Our separation happened after years of struggle. His alcohol addiction affected our lives badly, and that’s why I had to leave.”
Shubhangi, who plays Angoori Bhabhi on TV, shared that she tried very hard to save their marriage, but things were out of her hands. She mentioned that Piyush had even gone to rehab, but sadly, it didn’t help. Both their families also tried to support him, but his addiction eventually took over.
The Chidiya Ghar actress said that she finally decided to separate because she wanted to ensure a safe and healthy life for their daughter, Ashi. She explained, “It wasn’t a decision made overnight. Problems started around 2018–2019, and over time, it led to the divorce.”
Shubhangi also said that even after the divorce, she stayed on good terms with Piyush and his family. She even continued to encourage him to get better.
