Legendary actress Mumtaz has turned down the idea of playing Shah Rukh Khan’s mother in a film. In a recent interview, the 77-year-old actress explained why — she has a simple rule: she’ll only play a mother to actors who are at least 20 years younger than her.

Mumtaz Responds to SRK’s Old Crush Confession

Many fans know that Shah Rukh Khan, who turns 60 this year, once said that Mumtaz was his first crush. When asked about this, Mumtaz smiled and said he probably said it as a joke. But when asked if she’d play his mom in a movie, her answer was clear: No.

Speaking with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Mumtaz said,

“I’ll only play a mom to someone who is at least 20 years younger than me — and only if I look good on screen.”

She explained that she got married early in life, and even her real-life children don’t look much younger than her. For Mumtaz, how she looks on screen matters a lot when choosing roles now.

Why She Said No, Even Though Others Have Said Yes

When the interviewer pointed out that actress Jaya Bachchan has played mother roles to older actors, Mumtaz said,

“That’s her choice. As for me — tell Shah Rukh I’ll work with him if I can look like myself. But he’ll say no. Why should I have grey hair?”

Though she joked about it, Mumtaz praised Shah Rukh, calling him a smart, lovely, and intelligent man. She added,

“Just because he likes me doesn’t mean he’ll cast me if I don’t fit the role.”

Mumtaz Wants Strong and Stylish Roles

Mumtaz also shared that she looks up to Hollywood star Jane Fonda, especially her role in the series Mother-in-Law. She loved how Fonda’s character was strong, glamorous, and confident, and said she’d love to play similar roles.

“Her character dressed well, had a strong personality, and didn’t accept a poor girl as her daughter-in-law. That’s the kind of role I’d enjoy — stylish and bold,” she said.

More than ten years ago, Shah Rukh had said in an interview that his first two crushes were Mumtaz and Saira Bano, calling them the most beautiful women in the world.
