In an exclusive chat with Pinkvilla, famous choreographer Terence Lewis, who has judged many reality shows, shared his thoughts on how these shows work. He called them scripted and revealed some surprising details.
Terence Talks About Reality Shows
During an episode of Pinkvilla’s Behind the Success, Terence Lewis spoke openly about his experience as a reality show judge. He explained that while dance and judging are real, many moments on these shows are created for entertainment.
While discussing this, Terence was shown a picture of himself dancing with Deepika Padukone from the time she appeared on Dance India Dance Li’l Masters to promote Chennai Express.
“Many Things Are Scripted”
Terence admitted, “People think we just randomly dance, but the truth is, we are told to create a moment.” He laughed and added, “Yes, these things are scripted—interactions with guests and contestants, moments that look good on TV. But the talent, judging, and comments are real.”

Deepika’s Dance Was Not Planned
Terence revealed that he was asked to create a big moment on stage, so he chose Deepika. He shared that she wasn’t aware of the dance in advance, and they had to create the moment on the spot. He also mentioned, “I like to be prepared and rehearse, but television doesn’t give you time or budget for that.”
Helping Actresses on Stage Is Also Scripted
When asked about moments where he is seen helping actresses onto the stage, Terence admitted, “That’s fully scripted. In my 8 years as a judge, I have never voluntarily gone to bring a contestant on stage and said, ‘Please, ma’am.’”
He recalled how, on India’s Best Dancer, he was asked to create such moments for TRPs. Initially, he disagreed with the idea, but later, when he saw the high ratings, he understood why show makers insist on adding these fun moments.
“Audiences Are to Blame”
Terence added, “It’s sad, but the highest viewership spikes happen when we do these entertaining moments. So, in a way, the audience is to blame because they enjoy it. That’s why it’s scripted.”
Terence’s Career in Reality Shows
Terence Lewis has been a judge on several hit dance reality shows like Dance India Dance, Nach Baliye 5 & 8, and India’s Best Dancer 1, among others.
