Comedy Nights With Kapil Fame Upasana Singh Was the First Choice for Salman Khan’s Maine Pyar Kiya—Here’s Why She Was Rejected
Maine Pyar Kiya became a blockbuster, making Salman Khan and Bhagyashree overnight stars. While many actresses auditioned for the role of Suman, one surprising name came up recently—Comedy Nights With Kapil fame Upasana Singh.
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Upasana revealed she was originally chosen for the role of Suman by the film’s director, Sooraj Barjatya. However, his father, Raj Kumar Barjatya, had a different opinion.
The Audition and Rejection
Upasana recalled her first meeting with Sooraj Barjatya when she arrived in Mumbai. “He explained the film and my role. After my audition, he told me, ‘From my side, you are finalized. Come tomorrow and meet my father.’”
However, when she met Raj Kumar Barjatya the next day, things didn’t go as planned. “They are very sweet people, so he didn’t directly say ‘rejected,’ but they never called me back,” Upasana shared.
The Real Reason Revealed Later
Years later, while working on Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon with Rajshri Productions, the truth came out. Raj Kumar Barjatya revealed in front of the cast, including Kareena Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, and Hrithik Roshan, that Upasana was their first choice for Suman.
Upasana recalled the moment: “He said, ‘Do you know who was our first choice for Maine Pyar Kiya? It was Upasana.’ Everyone was shocked. I laughed and said, ‘But because of you, I didn’t get the role.’ He replied, ‘If I had chosen you, you might have left the industry like Bhagyashree did.’”
Height Was a Factor
Raj Kumar Barjatya also explained another reason for rejecting her. “He mentioned that I was taller than Salman Khan, and they wanted a lead actress who was shorter than him,” Upasana revealed.
Though she missed out on the iconic role, Upasana Singh went on to build a successful career and remains a beloved name in the entertainment industry.
